Stolen baby case postponed

The case against a suspect who allegedly stole a new-born baby in Tembisa was postponed to June 27th in the Tembisa Magistrate's Court on Tuesday this week.

It is alleged that Tshepo Bertha Lebaka approached the baby’s mother at Tembisa Hospital on May 10, and pretended to be running a competition for newly-born babies at the hospital.

The baby’s mother, Mercy Mabaso, said the suspect told her that her baby had won clothing and food vouchers, and convinced her to go to one of the big shops at Phumulani Mall in Tembisa.

They then took a taxi to the mall. Upon arrival, the suspect volunteered to hold the baby while the mother was choosing the clothes and groceries. After filling the trolley with clothes and grocery, she realised that the suspect and her baby were nowhere to be seen. She reported the matter to the securityand a case was also opened at the Tembisa Police Station.

Tembisa Police‘s Communication Director Captain Manyadza Ralizhivha said police launched an intensive investigation immediately after the case was reported.

“We arrested the suspect at Olivenhoutbosch on May 23 and took the baby to Tembisa Child Welfare while still doing DNA tests to verify the paternity of the child,” he said.

After the results came back positive, the baby was handed over to her mother on June 27. Because of her ordeal, the baby was named Blessings.
