Relief has followed a tragic day in Rabie Ridge after the child who was taken during a triple murder incident was found safe and unharmed.

The suspect linked to the shooting, which left three people dead and others injured in Kanana Extension 4, later died after allegedly turning the gun on himself during a police pursuit.

According to the SAPS, officers responded to the scene shortly after 06:00 on April 17.

SAPS spokesperson Captain Neldah Sekgobela said a 38-year-old suspect, a security guard in possession of a licensed firearm, allegedly went to his girlfriend’s home, where an argument ensued.

“It is alleged that the suspect shot and killed his 37-year-old girlfriend. As he was leaving the house, he also shot and killed the girlfriend’s uncle and a neighbour,” said Sekgobela.

The girlfriend’s aunt was also shot and sustained injuries to her lower body. She was transported to hospital for treatment.

During the incident, the suspect allegedly fled the scene with the girlfriend’s eight-year-old child, sparking concern for the child’s safety.

Police have since confirmed that the child has been found and is unharmed.

According to Colonel Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi, investigations indicate that the suspect later abandoned and set alight the vehicle he had used to flee.

“The burnt-out vehicle was discovered between Ivory Park and Thembisa.”

“He then allegedly hijacked a Toyota Avanza, with the driver activating a tracking device that enabled authorities to trace the vehicle.”

Members of the K9 unit and tracking team located the suspect on the N14 near Diepsloot. When officers attempted to stop him, he allegedly shot himself.

“A hijacking case has been opened, and investigations into the full sequence of events are ongoing,” Nevhuhulwi added.

Police have urged anyone with additional information to come forward as investigations continue.
