A 40-year-old man, who is believed to be linked to some of the rapes near the CR Swart Drive subway, had been arrested at Kempton Square on Friday.
According to Capt Jethro Mtshali, Kempton Park SAPS spokesman, two officers were patrolling near the mall when they saw a group of people, including mall security officers, chasing a suspect.
“Constables Moraka Moitsi and Richard Ngobeni approached the crowd to enquire when they heard a gun shot being fired and went in pursuit of the suspect,” he said.
One of the mall security officers managed to apprehend the suspect and he was found in possession of a small firearm with five rounds, as well as a variety of identity documents, bank cards, store cards, driver’s licences and passports.
The firearm was linked to a house breaking in Boksburg last year December.
The suspect is also being profiled and may be linked to the rapes that occurred near the subway which the police are currently investigating.
“He will be facing possession of stolen goods, possession of an unlicensed firearm as well as attempted murder charges,” said Mtshali.
