Police car hits woman

A 54-year-old Van Riebeeck Park woman is recovering from an accident after she was hit by a Kempton Park SAPS vehicle on the corner of Pascoe Avenue and Commissioner Street last week Thursday.

According to the woman she was walking to Profusia Street where she had an appointment with a real estate agent.

“A little before 5.30pm, as I walked across Commissioner Street, I had it in the back of my mind that cars usually don’t stop there but when I saw the police car coming towards the stop sign, I hoped he would stop,” she said.

She said the car hit her on the right hand side and she fell, injuring her knee and elbow.

“I scrambled for my glasses and found them next to the front wheel of the car. I made my way to the pavement near the pub on the corner just to collect myself as I was still shocked from the accident,” she explained.

Luckily some of her friends were at the nearby pub and came out to see what had happened.

“Although the officer did not leave the scene, he insisted that he stopped at the stop sign but I’m still puzzled at how he hit me if he did actually stop,” she added.

Capt Jethro Mtshali, Kempton Park SAPS spokesman, has confirmed that the police vehicle that was involved in the accident was driven by an officer who was on duty at the time.

“The matter is being investigated and the victim’s statement will be taken along with the officer’s and will be referred to the senior public prosecutor,” he said.
