THE prime suspect in the murder of an elderly Bonaero Park couple was arrested in Cape Town after two years.
“Shaheed Leen was arrested on October 21 after his identikit and fingerprints were circulated nationally through various channels, including the police’s “When Duty Calls” television programme,” said Capt Jethro Mtshali, Kempton Park SAPS spokesman.
Leen briefly appeared in a Cape Town court where the case was transferred to Kempton Park.
Percy (70) and Noeleen (65) Whitmore were attacked and killed in their home on August 4, 2011, in what police had said appeared to be a botched armed robbery.
His identikit and details were released to the media six months after the murders and his last given address was Cape Town.
“This is a major breakthrough for the detectives working on this case as it will bring them closer to uncovering this horrendous crime,” said Mtshali.
The couple’s bodies were discovered by their son. Percy was hit over the head with a blunt object and then suffocated with a bag. His wife was tied up but managed to free herself and tried to get away.
She was stabbed in the back and her throat was slit.
