These speeds will get you behind bars

Chief Supt Wilfred Kgasago, spokesman for the metro police, explained how the system worked.

If you drive on any road, excluding free-ways, where the speed limit may vary from 60km/h to 120km/h, you will be arrested if you exceed the limit by 30km/h. For example, 91km/h in a 60km/h zone.

On a highway, where the speed limit is 120km/h, you will be arrested if you exceed it by 40km/h. For example, 161km/h.

Kgasago said if you exceeded these limits and were caught on camera, you will receive a summons to appear in court.

If arrested or summonsed, a fine of between R2 000 and R 8000 may be issued if you have an acceptable reason for speeding.

If your excuse is not acceptable, your licence may be suspended. Every time one is convicted of speeding, the suspension increases. A fourth offender’s licence may be taken away.
