Squash celebrated in Modderfontein

Children from the Inkateko Project Orphanage in Tembisa spent World Squash Day at the Modderfontein Sports Complex on October 5.

The children were taught how to play squash and participated in other fun activities that included a visit from firefighters of the Modderfontein Fire Station.

Chairman of the Modderfontein Squash Club, Mr Piet van Dongen, said the club organises an event for underprivileged children every year. “Many of these children are introduced to squash for the first timeand if any of them are keen, we will bring them back on a weekly basis,” said Mr van Dongen. He added, “Resident squash club coach, Dikana Mthombeni, will provide coaching and in return maybe a hidden talent could be found in some of the children. We will push them further and assist wherever possible to help them grow in the sport,” said Mr van Dongen.

The squash club was refurbished and reopened in September 2012. It grew from an initial 20 members to 250 after it merged with the Edenvale Squash Club.
