Community programme feeds Thembisa children during school holidays
Nutrition program gives back to the children in Thembisa.
Community builder and educator Hluphi Shili, together with her team, hosted a nutrition programme over the Easter holidays to support children in Thembisa.
The initiative aims to ensure that learners continue to receive nutritious meals during school holidays, while also providing a safe and supportive environment.
Shili, a teacher by profession and a School-Based Support Team (SBST) coordinator responsible for vulnerable learners, said her journey in community work began in 2014.

“I started with community initiatives such as hosting annual Christmas parties for senior citizens, and organising school uniforms, dignity packs, food parcels, bread and stationery for those in need,” she said.
Inspired by the school nutrition programmes offered during the academic term, Shili launched the holiday feeding scheme to address the gap many learners face when schools close.
The programme, which began in January 2025, provides both breakfast and lunch to children during school holidays throughout the year.
“The response from the community has been very positive. Parents have welcomed the programme and are comfortable allowing their children to attend and receive meals,” she said.

Shili emphasised the importance of community collaboration in addressing malnutrition.
“As Thembisans, we can work together with stakeholders and local businesses who are passionate about giving back.
“We encourage support in the form of food and essential ingredients rather than monetary donations,” she added.
She said the initiative has received strong support from parents in the area, which has helped ensure its success.
“I get strength and encouragement from seeing the children eat, smile and feel happy. Knowing they have something to eat every day gives me peace of mind,” said Shili.
The recent Easter programme was particularly meaningful, with parents expressing appreciation for the quality of the meals provided.
“I am committed to maintaining this standard and continuing to put smiles on the faces of our children while ensuring they have food on the table,” she said.
