Golf day success drives Ebuhleni course development plans

The Tembisa Golf Club’s Chairman’s Cup has boosted fundraising efforts for the planned Ebuhleni Golf Course development.

The Ebuhleni Golf Course fundraising project received a significant boost following the sponsorship of the Tembisa Golf Club’s prestigious Chairman’s Cup by DEE Holdings.

Tembisa Golf Club chairperson, Sipho Sidu, praised DEE Holdings owner Douglas Dube for the company’s philanthropic support, noting that the sponsorship played a vital role in advancing the Ebuhleni development initiative.

The Chairman’s Cup, one of the club’s flagship events, drew a strong field of more than 60 golfers who competed at the Kempton Park Golf Course.

Adding a unique touch to the competition, seven carcasses of game meat, including wildebeest, impala and warthog, were up for grabs as prizes.

Freddie Mahlare was crowned the 2025 Chairman’s Cup champion after delivering an outstanding performance.

The Limpopo-born golfer, now based in Kempton Park, secured victory with a net score of 68, earning both the trophy and a substantial portion of impala meat.

Lunars Mowela finished second with a net score of 70, taking home a full springbok carcass, while Benjy Monyanyedi claimed third place on a count-out after carding a net 73, walking away with a half portion of wildebeest.

Collen Sibeko secured fourth place, narrowly edging out James Diireng, who finished fifth, with both players receiving portions of wildebeest and warthog.

Beyond the competition, the event was widely regarded as a success, with golfers enjoying well-supported waterholes at the fifth, 10th and 13th holes.

Highlights included a warthog spit braai at hole 10, sponsored by Isaak Game Meat, snacks at hole 13 sponsored by Vezubule, and refreshments provided by Old Mutual at hole five.

In total, seven game carcasses were awarded, with Noel Gurure and Phetoane among the remaining recipients.

Speaking at the gala dinner, Sidu expressed his appreciation for the overwhelming support from both players and sponsors.

“Tembisa Golf Club can only grow from strength to strength with the support we are receiving from partners such as DEE Holdings,” said Sidu.

He extended special thanks to Dube, who is also a member of the club.

Looking ahead, the club remains committed to hosting more major tournaments to raise funds for the Ebuhleni Golf Course project.

The long-term goal is to develop a full nine-hole course in Thembisa and nurture future talent.

“The fundraising efforts will continue until the vision of a completed course becomes a reality,” said Sidu, adding that the club hopes to one day produce world-class golfers through its development programme.
