Police still investigates 17-shot murder

Mr Shumani Nesta Mukwevho, who miraculously survived the multiple gunshot wounds, claims the police have not bothered to contact him about the case

The case involving a man who was shot 17 times is still being investigated by the SAPS.

Mr Shumani Nesta Mukwevho, who miraculously survived the multiple gunshot wounds, claims the police have not bothered to contact him about the case.

Mr Mukwevho was shot on the morning of July 30, 2010. Three years later, and no one has been convicted for the shooting.

According to Mr Mukwevho, he was on his way to pick up a colleague from his house when he was ambushed by two men.

“When I arrived at my colleague’s house, I took out my phone to tell him I had arrived. I saw a car switch its lights on, but I did not hear it approach. The man in the passenger seat exited the vehicle and started shooting at me. He shot me four times, in my arm and my stomach. When he ran out of bullets, the driver then exited the vehicle and also began shooting me. He fired many shots at me, many of which struck me. He then put the gun against my head, to finish me off, but luckily the gun jammed. I recognised the driver of the car,” said Mr Mukwevho.

Mr Mukwevho was rushed tohospital, where doctors began operating on him. Two bullets were left inside Mr Mukwevho, owing to their placement. One had lodged near his spine and doctors could not remove it.

The doctor said if he tries to take the bullet out, I might be paralysed because it is near the spinal cord,” said Mr Mukwevho.

The second round was removed only after it began to cause medical problems with his stomach.

A case was opened at the Tembisa SAPS and one suspect was arrested.

“I heard the suspect was appearing in court. Later I heard the case was withdrawn due to lack of evidence. The police did not even contact me,” said Mr Mukwevho.

The Tembisa SAPS communications director, Mr Manyadza Ralizhivha said, “The case is still under investigationand if the complainant has any problem, he is at liberty to come and discuss the case with the investigation officer.”

When The Tembisan asked for the investigating officer, Mr Ralizhivha said he did not know who was investigating the case
