A scrap yard owner (27), security guard (29) and two of their helpers (both 21) were arrested at Kempton Park Hospital on Monday last week for stealing aluminium.
Cobus Heymans, security officer of PHS Cops Security, was patrolling on Christoffel Street at about 2pm when he saw a light blue Corsa bakkie reverse into the hospital grounds.
“They did not think I saw them,” he said.
They apparently cut open a lock with a side-cutter at a gate on Christoffel Street to gain entry.
Upon investigation Heymans found the bakkie parked next to the nurses’ home. He called for back-up from Norkem Park SAPS and his area manager, Danie van Zyl, when he found the scrap yard owner inside the bakkie. The police later arrested his two helpers inside the hospital.
The security guard at the gate on Elgin Road was also arrested after the three arrested men told police they had to give him two cell phones to gain “entry” to the hospital.
Capt Lesibana Molokomme, spokesman for Norkem Park SAPS, confirmed the arrest of the four men. He said the police recovered the bakkie full of aluminium, all neatly cut into pieces.
He could not supply an estimated value for the aluminium.
