A few hours after the Hawks’ operation led to the seizure of drugs with an estimated street value of R75 million in Edleen, Sebenza SAPS members found cocaine worth about R3,2 million in Croydon last week Wednesday.
According to Sebenza SAPS spokesman, Const Sharon Mahamba, she, along with a colleague, W/O Richard Phaka, received a tip off about a Nigerian man who may be in possession of drugs.
“We went to the location, a hotel in Croydon, and when the man arrived, we asked to search his vehicle,” said Mahamba.
The officers only found groceries but upon further inspection, they discovered the drugs had been hidden with the groceries.
“He showed us a sealed packet of white sugar but when we opened it, we found 22kg of cocaine with a street value of R3,2 million,” she added.
The 32-year-old was subsequently arrested.
Meanwhile earlier that day drugs with an estimated street value of R75 million were seized and two men arrested in the storage facility near Edleen Primary School on Wednesday afternoon.
According to police, two men, a Nigerian and Tanzanian national, were arrested during the operation.
The men were found with 20kg of heroin, 15kg of cocaine and15kg of tik.
Hawks spokesman, Capt Paul Ramaloko, told media this was the biggest drug raid they had netted so far this year in terms of value. Crime intelligence officers had been closely monitoring the men for the past few months, he said.
During the last two years, 669 arrests were effected and about 298 804 847kg of drugs were confiscated, with a monetary value of R95 million.
A total of 41 laboratories were closed during the year.
