TWO friends who tried to get away with cigarettes worth nearly R900 000 by faking a hijacking, walked straight into the strong arm of the law.
The one was arrested in December for hijacking and his accomplice for perjury on Monday last week.
It all began on December 19 on the P91, close to Esselen Park.
According to Capt Lesibana Molokomme, spokesman for Norkem Park SAPS, members of Benoni Flying Squad spotted a Mercedes Vito filled with cartons of cigarettes valued at almost R900 000. The man was driving in the direction of Norkem Park.
When he saw the police were following him, he stopped the vehicle and tried to run away. He was arrested for hijacking the vehicle.
Det W/O Kenny Mthembu started to investigate the case and discovered it was a planned hijacking, Molokomme said.
According to him the Mercedes Vito was a company vehicle and the perjury suspect was supposed to deliver the cigarettes. However, he gave the vehicle to his friend (the one arrested in December), while he went to Kempton Park Police Station to report he had been hijacked.
By that time the “hijacker” had already been nabbed by police, which he did not know. Norkem Park SAPS then arrested him last week.
