EXECUTIVE mayor, Clr Mondli Gungubele, awarded 230 top matric students with bursaries to the value of R5.7 million during the mayoral Academic Excellence Awards at Emperors Palace last week Wednesday.
The bursary recipients also received R500 worth of book vouchers.
Speaking to the students, the mayor said bursaries were an investment into the future.
“We are not doing you a favour by awarding you bursaries, we are doing ourselves a favour because we believe that education is a lifetime investment that can only serve to grow our city and country,” he said.
One of the bursary recipients currently registered with the University of Johannesburg to pursue a qualification in homeopaths expressed her gratitude to the mayor.
“The bursary has assisted me a great deal because my family could not afford to pay for my university fees. I have always dreamed of becoming a doctor and it always seemed impossible because of my financial background.
“I am really happy that it is finally happening. I am happy to be a resident of Ekurhuleni and words cannot describe my joy at what the municipality has done for me. I am living my dream,” she said.
