TWO male suspects were on arrested for rape at about 9pm on Saturday at a local shebeen at the RDP houses in Esselen Park.
According to Norkem Park SAPS spokesman, Capt Lesibana Molokomme, the two men, aged 19 and 20, were apprehended after one of the rape victims recognised them at the shebeen and alerted the police.
The woman said she recognised the men’s voices, who spoke in SeTswana and IsiZulu. The arrest is linked to a rape case the victim and her friend opened in mid-February.
The victim and her friend claim they were walking close to an open veld at the RDP houses around midnight on February 15 when three armed men approached them.
They were held at gunpoint by the three men while they had their cell phones, a pair of earrings, a ring and R120 cash stolen.
The suspects then ordered them to walk towards the veld where they proceeded to rape the two women.
“The victim said she managed to identify the two suspects through their voices. She said during the rape incident, although she and her friend could not see their attackers’ faces because it was too dark, she could recognise the sound of their voices,” Molokomme said.
The third suspect has not yet been identified and investigations to track him down continue.
Forensic investigations continue to determine if the arrested suspects are the alleged rapists.
The two suspects will face charges of rape and armed robbery.
