To Be Like This Rock on at Windybrow

The play takes a look at the horrors of women and children in human trafficking

To be like this Rock at the Windybrow Theatre from March 8-16 is a harrowing look at human trafficking.

The story follows four women and a girl working together in a quarry breaking bricks. Each was taken from their home into the sex trade.

All they wish for now is “to be like this rock”, which unlike them feels nothing when it is smashed and broken. The story employs powerful music, images and dialogue to portray the horror of the epidemic in our society.

The LexisNexis Human Trafficking report indicates that South Africa ranks among the 10 countries in Africa where human trafficking is at its worst, with 100 000 people reportedly being trafficked in the country annually.

The main driving factors for human trafficking in South Africa are said to be for sexual exploitation, forced labour, drugs and parents selling their children for adoptions or sex.

The collaborative project is written by Umsindo Theatre Projects and Neil Coppen. Umsindo Theatre Projects, the brain child of twin brothers Musawenkosi and Bongumusa Shabalala from Umlazi, Durban has put out projects such as Truth Heals, Homeless and Pieces of the Puzzle, Caged, The Seed and Brothers.

The play, which was directed by the brothers, won the National Arts Festival award in 2011.

Tickets are R45 a person for shows from Tuesday until Thursday and R55 for shows on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Shows times are 8pm from Tuesday until Saturday and at 3pm on Sundays.
