AN environmental impact assessment will be done soon to look at possibilities to prevent the Norkem Park pan from flooding nearby properties in future.
EKOINFO will send environmental impact assessors to the pan on the P91 near McDonald’s Norkem Park to determine whether the municipality will be able to put in a storm water management system at the pan.
Sean Hutcheons, an environmental impact accessor , said they would first have to determine what the impact of the system would have on the pan. People will look at all spectrums, like the water, wildlife etc.
He said the impact on the pan should not be a negative one. When all assessments have been made by the end of April, it will be determined whether a storm management system could be put in.
Hutheons says the pan does not have an outlet and is a evaporation pond. He said with all the new developments around the pond it is now also a storm water catchment area.
The rising water levels of the pan has again flooded the yard of a nearby Pikkewyn Street resident last week.
The resident, who wished to remain anonymous, said it was not just her house that was affected, but others in the street as well.
She said the pan flooded her premises before and the municipality had pumped water out of her yard back into the pan last year but had stopped about four weeks ago.
According to her the rain is a contributing factor but the new developments around the pan plays a huge role in the situation.
A spokesman for the metro said they dispatched a storm water team to pump water out at Norkem Park Pan on Friday.
