TODAY marks an historic occasion when the City of Ekurhuleni unveils “show houses” as its first batch of subsidised houses since the Gauteng Provincial Government granted municipalities accreditation to build houses for their own communities.
This will bring relief to Etwatwa Extension 35 (also known as Khom Bhiza) residents who are currently residing in an informal settlement.
The Khom Bhiza residents are beneficiaries of this housing development, boasting an average yard size of 180m² and insulated ceilings, which keeps warm in winter and cool in summer.
The houses further boast 800mm concrete aprons around the house to channel rainwater – instead of gutters, downpipes and rainwater channels.
A total of 334, 40m² houses will be built with three different designs. The beneficiaries have been invited to choose their preferred designs.
According to the Member of the mayoral committee on human settlement, Clr Queen Duba, of the 334 houses to be built, about 182 will be completed during this 2013/2014 financial year.
