AFTER having been on the run for five years, a fugitive was nabbed after applying for a position in the Ekurhuleni Municipality peace corps.
Born in Kwa-Zulu Natal in 1989, convicted of robbery, fraud and extortion in the Free State in 2008, this young fugitive escaped from lawful custody in 2009 and migrated to Gauteng, metro police spokesman, Chief Supt Wilfred Kgasago, said.
“Five years down the line, thinking his criminal record has been expunged, the suspect decided to apply to be part of the Ekurhuleni Municipality Peace Corps. That was his undoing that goes with the possibility of a long-term behind bars,” he said.
The runaway was taken into custody at the metro police’s junior training traffic centre in Birchleigh on Monday morning when coming for an interview with the hope of serving in the peace corps.
“The 25-year-old suspect excelled in his physical assessment during the selection process. His cover was blown when his fingerprints were checked to ensure he had no criminal record.
“That was when the metro police realised he was a man on the run. The long arm of the law caught up with him and he had been handed to the Free State SAPS detectives. The handover took place at Kempton Park Police Station.”
