A Kempton Park man who was robbed of R61 000 on March 14 after making a bulk withdrawal from a bank, would like to warn others to be more vigilant.
“I went to the branch in Boksburg in the afternoon. When I returned to Kempton Park, I stopped at the bottle store in Croydon to buy something but when I returned to my car, I realised my car’s lock pin had been tampered with,” said the man who chose to remain anonymous.
Although he is not certain how the thieves knew he had that much cash on him, he suspects that the casual conversation with the teller may have led to something sinister.
“We made small talk with the teller who assisted me. It was only after I was robbed that I realised she made certain to ask me whether I would be headed home after the withdrawal. She asked me if I was taking it to Forex and when I said no, she asked if I’ was taking it with me and if I was going straight home,” he said.
The man said it seemed the thieves knew exactly what they were looking for as the only things they took were two envelopes with the cash in it.
“People have to be careful who they speak to, even in the bank, especially when making withdrawals. I wonder if I had headed straight home what would have happened to me – people have died for far less,” he said.
