A 35-year-old man from Phomolong section was arrested for opening a false case with the police on Friday last week.
According to the Tembisa SAPS spokesperson, Constable Tebogo Sesing, the police were patrolling Esangweni area when they noticed a White VW Golf.
“They stopped the vehicle and asked to search it. Nothing illegal was found, but when the officers checked the vehicle registration, it was found that the vehicle had been reported as stolen at the Rabie Ridge SAPS. The driver claimed he had bought the vehicle from a man in Phomolong,” he said.
Const Sesing said the police proceeded to the address given to them and found a 35-year-old man who confirmed that he had sold the vehicle to the driver.
“The suspect told the police he reported the vehicle as stolen because he had a lot of traffic fines. The vehicle was never stolen. He was arrested and detained in the Tembisa police station. We urge the community to not open false cases. It is a criminal offence and a waste of the state’s resources and time,” he said.
The suspect is expected to appear in the Tembisa Magistrate’s Court on a charge of perjury.
