A 50-year-old man was arrested on Wednesday last week after hijacking a truck carrying groceries valued at R40 000.
According to Capt Lesibana Molokomme, Norkem Park SAPS spokesman, the man was arrested at about 11.30am on Zuurfontein Road in Kempton Park West on a charge of possession of a hijacked vehicle.
The arrest came after a hijacking was reported at Norkem Park Police Station the same day.
“The driver of the truck had come to our offices to open a case of truck hijacking. He said the day before he was stopped on London Road in Alexandra at about 10.30am by a group of seven men dressed in police and metro police uniforms,” Molokomme said.
He said the suspects, who were driving in two white VW Golfs, pointed firearms at him, put him in one of the VW Golfs and drove off with him. They later dropped him off on Modderfontein Road.
Sector 4 police members, Consts Gloria Lebogo and Antony Nokeri, were quick to make the arrests the same day. They were patrolling along Zuurfontein Road when they spotted the truck.
“When the officers searched the vehicle, they found the truck loaded with groceries valued at R40 000, as well as a device used to block the signal of the tracking device.”
In the meantime, not far from the scene where the tracking device was found in the parking area of China Gate Shopping Centre, Sgt Moyahabo Moropo and the crime prevention unit noticed a white VW Golf with no registration number.
“It was discovered the car was reported stolen at Douglasdale SAPS in July 2013. A 36-year-old male suspect was arrested on the scene for possession of a hijacked motor vehicle.”
Investigations are underway to determine whether or not the Golf is one of the getaway cars used during the hijacking.
