CONSTRUCTION work to move a water pipeline from underneath a service station on Atlas Road, has started.
The metro is moving the pipe to the road reserve as a permanent solution to prevent future flooding of the service station.
In reaction to a recent article in Express about the station being flooded three times as a result of a burst pipe, the metro said the water pipeline was a feeder to a lower portion of Bonaero Park. The pipe is of aging asbestos cement (AC) that needs to be replaced with a uPVC pipe.
The pipe has burst three times since November 2013 to date.
Three meetings were held with the owner of the station, Rooksana Soobrayan, since then.
Although the municipality responded to the burst pipe every time it was reported, the long term solution would be to relocate the pipe.
“An internal contractor was requested to assist in the relocation of the pipe. Although delays were encountered with obtaining the way leaves to work in the area, we can report that the contractor has started with the construction works and the project completion date is estimated as June.”
