The remains of a middle-aged man burnt beyond recognition were discovered on a street in Tswelopele extension on Friday last week.
Residents of Tswelopele, Winnie Mandela and Duduza flocked to the scene as news of the discovery spread.
It is believed the man attempted to rob three unknown men with a firearm, but found them more than prepared for him.
The three men were allegedly returning from a tavern in the Winnie Mandela Informal Settlement when they were attacked.
It is believed they managed to disarm their attacker. The three men the allegedly fought with their attacker, who was killed in the struggle. It is also believed the deceased was first killed and then set alight.
Some residents claim the deceased was the leader of a gang known as “Wrong Turn” and used to terrorise residents in the area by committing robberies.
He was certified dead at the scene by paramedics.
The Ivory Park SAPS communications officer, Warrant Officer Neldah Sekgobela, said the police at the scene recovered the deceased’s shoes, shack keys and a cap.
“A case of murder was opened at the Ivory Park SAPS. We appeal for any information that could lead to the arrests of the suspects. People are urged not to take the law into their own hands,” she said.
Members from the Gauteng Pathology Unit took the remains to the Germiston mortuary.
