A man who falsely claimed he had been hijacked and robbed, now faces a charge of perjury.
According to Capt Lesibana Molokomme, spokesman for Norkem Park SAPS, the man (22) came to Norkem Park Police Station on April 23 at around 11pm to report that his company car, a silver Toyota Hilux, had been hijacked by two males at the intersection of Elgin Road and Soutpansberg Drive in Van Riebeeck Park.
He told police two armed men opened the passenger door, which was not locked, while he was waiting at the red light. They instructed him to drive to an open veld next to Soutpansberg Drive.
“The man said the hijackers dropped him off and left with the company car, personal bank cards, R500 cash, an iPhone, clothes, house keys, company keys and his Diesel wrist watch,” Molokomme said.
The following day, at about 1.30pm, the complainant called the police saying he had found his car in the same spot where the hijackers had dropped him off. On arrival at the scene the police found the man’s Hilux trapped in some mud.
The officers asked the man to drive with them to the police station for further questioning.
During cross examination, it was found the complainant was still in possession of his iPhone cell phone, which he claimed had been stolen during the hijacking.
“The phone was confiscated and kept at the police station for further investigation.”
