EKURHULENI will become the second largest municipality in 2016 when it will amalgamate with Lesedi Municipality.
Lesedi includes Heidelberg, Devon, Ratanda and Impumelelo.
The amalgamation will take place after the 2016 municipal elections, making it the second largest municipality in South Africa after Tshwane.
A political management committee had already been established. This committee comprises the mayors of the metro and municipality, the two speakers, chief whips and members of other political parties.
The political committee will now establish a technical committee to manage the process.
According to Ekurhuleni’s executive mayor, Clr Mondli Gungubele, the new borders had already been finalised. It had been approved by the Demarcation Board and the necessary notices had been advertised.
The amalgamation will increase Ekurhuleni’s current land from 1 975 square meters to 3 278 and its population from 3,17 million to 3,27 million.
