Kwazini impresses

Art groups from across the East Rand attended the Face of Nelson Mandela Adult Education and Training Advocacy Campaign (Fonmmaack) held at the Moses Molelekwa Art Centre in Tembisa on Friday last week.

According to the spokesperson of Fonmmaack Mr Steven Thapelo Khunou, the main aim of the campaign is to celebrate the legacy of Nelson Mandela and to always remind South Africans about the role Mandela played in bringing democracy to South Africa and the world at large.

“Mandela was a global icon and many countries around the globe have honoured him in many different ways. As artists, we realised that we have to organise art competitions to honour him,” he said.

Art groups that participated in the event came from Daveyton, Wadeville, Benoni, Katlehong and Tembisa. They competed in choral music, poetry, drama and traditional music.

Artists from the Kwazini Adult Centre had the crowd asking for more with their dancing skills. They reminded traditional music lovers of groups such as Mahotela Queens and the Shinyori sisters.

Mr Khunou said the winners of the competition will walk away with a recording contract.

“We are impressed by the standard of the performance here today and we believe the artists worked hard in preparing for the competition,” he said.

The principal of the Kwazini Adult Centre, Mrs D Mnisi, said she was happy the participants from her centre stole the show during the competition.

“It shows we are really doing something positive at the Kwazini Adult Centre,” she said.
