The Tembisa police arrested a 24-year-old woman for illegally trying to abort her baby in Leboeng section on Sunday last week.
The police received information from residents of a woman about to commit an illegal abortion.
The police went to the location described by residents and found a woman lying on the floor in pain.
The officers questioned the suspect who said she was from Hammaskraal. She claimed to have found her abortion helper on the internet.
“The suspect said she paid R2 000 to conduct the illegal abortion. She was taken to hospital by ambulance for further treatment. On arriving at the hospital, the suspect gave birth to a healthy child,” said Constable Tebogo Sesing, The Tembisa SAPS communications officer.
The woman who was helping the suspect to abort her baby is still at large.
“Since January this year, eight cases of concealment of birth were reported to the police station. In most of the reports, the foetuses were found in sewerage drains, dumping sites or in plastic bags. We recently found a healthy child abandoned inside a bag in a taxi from Pretoria. Women should not conduct illegal abortions. Women are urged to consult legal institutions to abort unwanted children. The suspects will be arrested. We also request residents to report such suspects,” said Const Sesing.
