A 19-year-old girl was arrested for allegedly committing an illegal abortion in Umthanbeka section on Friday last week.

A 19-year-old girl was arrested for allegedly committing an illegal abortion in Umthanbeka section on Friday last week.

The police were called to a scene after a resident found a foetus dumped at the dumping site in the area.

The foetus was allegedly found in a blue plastic bag.

The Tembisa SAPS spokesperson, Constable Tebogo Sesing, said the police at the scene asked residents if they knew of any women who was pregnant in the area.

“A resident told officers that there was a pregnant teenage who lived not far from the scene. The police proceeded to the address given and found the teenager, who was linked to the crime,” said Const Sesing.

The girl was apprehended and detained at the Tembisa police cells.

The suspect is expected to appear in the Tembisa Magistrate’s Court on the charge of concealment of birth.

“I would like to thank the residents who reported the crime and most importantly, for helping the police with information. Remember, residents are the eyes and ears of the police. Let us work together to fight crime,” said Const Sesing.
