Girl (16) critical after accident
A 16-year-old girl was critically injured after being struck by a light delivery vehicle at Ivory Park, extension 8, on Wednesday last week.
It is believed the driver of the vehicle was a 17-year-old boy, who did not have a driver’s license.
It is believed he lost control of the vehicle and struck the victim.
The critically injured girl was with her friends, returning after some shopping, when the accident happened.
Ms Zanele Sukazi, the victim’s mother, said she was on her way to vote when she received the call that her daughter had been injured.
“I was so scared and shocked that I could not do anything. My daughter was lying on the ground shaking, without saying a word. On arrival, I thought my child was dead,” she said.
Paramedics from Netcare 911 and members from the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department attended to the scene.
The Netcare 1 helicopter was despatched to airlift the victim to the Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Hospital for further medical treatment.
The Ivory Park SAPS communications officer, Warrant Officer Neldah Sekgobela, confirmed that a case of reckless and negligent driving was opened.
“The suspect was arrested and he is expected to appear in the Tembisa Magistrate’s Court soon,” she said.
