Companies encourage maths and science

"South Africa has a poor education performance when compared to local, continental and global standards."

This is according to the national manager at Maths Centre Incorporate Sciences, Mr Christopher Nyangani, during an event at Phomolong Secondary School on Saturday last week.

“When looking at our matric results every year, only a few pupils pass with good results,” he said.

When addressing pupils and teachers during the event, Mr Nyangani said a significant component of the poor quality of education in the country is because of the poor quality of teaching.

“Teaching-related issues are a major challenge facing public schools. Under performing teachers in the country are unaware of their own learning deficits and do not understand the full demands of the curriculum,” he added.

The event was attended by schools officials, pupils, former students, business people and a representative from Ivanplats Mining Engineering, Mr Jacob Motswaledi.

The secondary schools attending included Tembisa West, Phomolong, Boitumelong and Ingqayisivele.

It is sponsored by AEL Mining Services.

The AEL Mining Services development manager, Mr Steven Kgomo, said they started sponsoring the project from 2003 to ensure pupils in Tembisa are introduced to maths, science and technology subjects.

“Our company specialises in these subjects and we are looking at our future employees. It is better to invest in them earlier rather than later. We want to see the pupils being admitted to universities and passing with good results,” he added.

Mr Kgomo added that they are upgrading the schools’ laboratories and libraries for the pupils to have enough resources.

One of the pupils who attended, Avumile Seriba (16), said that the event was fun and informative.

“I have just learnt how useful maths and science is for the future. I would recommend maths and science to the pupils who hate these subjects,”he said.
