A 15-year-old boy was mugged at knife point while riding his bicycle along a temporary footpath at the road works on André Greyvenstein Road.
He was lucky to escape unscathed from the incident on Sunday, June 1 at 9.30am.
The boy’s father, who wished to remain anonymous, said there was only one mugger. The man asked for his son’s watch and money, but he had no money or watch.
The robber took his son’s cell phone and saddlebag from his bicycle before escaping on foot in the direction of the R24.
The father said authorities attempted to provide a safe route through the construction area but had instead created a secluded bottleneck where everyone was vulnerable to thieves.
“I was probably only a minute behind my son but the mugger got away,” he said.
The father warned people to be careful and said one should not venture there alone, even during the day.
He said a security guard told him criminals hid in makeshift shacks under the bridges of the adjacent highways.
Although the boy’s father did not report the crime to the local police, he did report it at crimelime.co.za
He told Kempton Express he knew of one other incident in the area.
