Metro police officer crashes through wall

This notorious corner has seen six motor vehicle accidents since March

AN off duty metro police officer, allegedly driving under the influence of alcohol, injured two pedestrians when he crashed through a garden wall in Norkem Park.

The accident occurred on the corner of Tortelduif Street and Gamtoos Avenue on Father’s Day just after 4pm.

This notorious corner has seen six motor vehicle accidents since March.

The latest accident, which left one male pedestrian with minor injuries and sent a female pedestrian to hospital, involved the private vehicle of officer Stanley Mokoena. He crashed through the wall of Jakes Lawrence’s residence.

“I pulled him out of the wreckage myself and saw empty beer bottles in the car.”

Lawrence said that Mokoena was not injured.

Lawrence said there had been many accidents on this corner over the years because drivers come from nearby shebeens and drive too fast around the already tricky corners.

Lawrence told Kempton Express he had proposed to the metro in the past that speed humps be erected. He is now filing a second request after the latest accident.

When the first accident occurred on March 1, a white bakkie drove into Lawrence’s wall. He said there were a number of pre-schools in the area and children walked around all the time.

Capt Lesibana Molekomme, spokesman for Norkem Park SAPS, confirmed a case of drunk driving was opened and Mokoena briefly appeared in Kempton Park Magistrate’s Court on June 17.

Spokesman for the metro police, Chief Supt Wilfred Kgsago, confirmed an officer named Stanley Mokoena was employed by the metro police.

“The EMPD will decide as to whether to let the internal hearing run parallel with the criminal case or await the outcome of the criminal case to be finalised.”
