An alleged reckless and negligent driver was arrested after reportedly knocking down and driving over an EMPD officer in Thembisa on Thursday, August 20.

According to the EMPD, officers were carrying out their normal duties along Andrew Mapheto Drive when they attempted to stop a black BMW.

The male driver allegedly failed to comply and sped off, prompting EMPD officers to give chase.

The officers eventually cornered the vehicle on Zephania Msebenzi Street in Ibaxa Section, Thembisa.

“As officers approached the vehicle, the suspect drove off, knocking down an officer and driving over him, before fleeing the scene. The injured officer was assisted by his partner and emergency medical services were called to provide medical attention,” said EMPD media liaison officer Thabiso Makgato.

On August 24, the suspect arrived at the EMPD Northern Region Offices looking for his vehicle keys. The vehicle is equipped with a keyless system.

“He was immediately intercepted, and a case of reckless and negligent driving and attempted murder of a police officer was opened.”

The suspect, who is reportedly 28 years old, has not yet appeared in court. His identity has not been revealed.
