Smash-and-grab suspect arrested
One suspect was arrested following a smash and grab incident that took place on the R21 by the Voortrekker Road offramp.
EMPD Equestrian Unit members came across a stationary vehicle on the roadway with an open door. The vehicle was unattended.
On investigating, the officers were informed by on-lookers that a woman’s handbag had been stolen from the vehicle.
With the assistance of residents, officers were able to arrest the suspect.
Unfortunately, the woman’s handbag was still missing. Witnesses said the suspect threw the handbag into a getaway car, which left him behind.
The EMPD spokesperson, Chief Superintendent Wilfred Khgsago, said officers at the scene believed the suspect may have been high on drugs.
“He was taken to the Kempton Park SAPS where he was charged with theft and malicious damage to property,” he said.
The suspect is expected to appear in the Kempton Park Magistrate’s Court soon.
