SUSAN and George Smit, who were held hostage at a house in Birch Acres a few weeks ago, claimed Norkem Park SAPS officers were part of the party that would not let them leave the premises.
The couple went to a house on Swartpiek Avenue to give a quote on upholstering furniture. While there, a previous client, Stanley Khoza, showed up.
The couple is currently involved in a civil law suit with Khoza.
The couple said Khoza demanded that they paid him his money back or gave him his furniture. Khoza would not let them leave and parked behind them.
The couple called Norkem Park SAPS, who listened to both parties. They claim the police then sided with Khoza. They said the officers would not let them leave until Khoza got what he wanted.
In the meantime they called son George. When he got there, he was not allowed to enter the premises, according to the couple.They said he forced his way in.
Spokesman for Norkem Park SAPS, Capt Lesibana Molokomme, said during his investigation into the complaint he determined that the police officers asked both parties to drive with them to Norkem Park Police Station to sort out the matter. While driving there, the couple drove off to Kempton Park Police Station and then to Tembisa Cluster, where they were advised to go back to Norkem Park SAPS, where a case of intimidation against Khoza was opened.
Molokomme said whether the couple was held captive by the police officers was almost impossible to determine and they would have to prove it happened.
