TWO men were nabbed on Thursday afternoon last week shortly after they had stolen a truck on Commissioner Street.
The suspected thief driving the stolen truck was apprehended by the police and his accomplice, escorting him in a Toyota Avanza, was arrested by the metro police. The arrests took place at around 5.20pm.
Chief Supt Wilfred Kgasago, metro police spokesman, said vigilant members residing in the area noticed the pair driving around aimlessly and decided to keep an eye on the two men in the Toyota Avanza.
“Shortly thereafter, a report came through that one of the suspects was seen driving in the Mitsubishi truck,” Kgasago said.
The police pursued the truck and arrested the driver at the corner of Commissioner and Du Plessis streets. The metro police received the lookout message via his two-way radio and on sighting the Toyota Avanza, gave chase.
“The Avanza was cornered at the intersection of Commissioner Street and Pretoria Road.
“The two suspects from Alexandra, who are in their early thirties, were charged with theft of a motor vehicle at Kempton Park Police Station,” Kgasago said.
In another incident the same afternoon at 5pm a young couple was arrested when an activated tracker device in the stolen vehicle they were driving led the metro police to them in Ivory Park.
The VW Polo sedan was stolen in Ivory Park the previous night.
Kgasago said the crime prevention task team followed the signal and the couple’s joyride was ended at the intersection of Loop Vas and Moses Mabhida streets.
The 28-year-old boyfriend, a resident of Ivory Park, and his 22-year-old girlfriend from Esselen Park were booked in at Ivory Park Police Station for being in possession of a stolen motor vehicle.
