Two princesses, a queen in one ‘castle’
The sisters were crowned on the same night after competing in the Miss and Mr Africa 2014 pageant
WHEN your mother is the reigning Queen of the World, it’s only fitting that you have a crown of your own.
Glen Marais sisters, Alexia (6) and Carli (4) Brits, were crowned Miss Tiny Africa 2014 and Mini Miss Africa 2014 respectively on June 29 at the Mr and Miss Africa 2014 in Pretoria.
“The girls did four rounds during the competition, which included them being in casual wear, formal wear and national costumes, as well as a question and answer round. They competed against 40 girls and were able to come out tops,” their doting mother Cindy said.
The pageant requires entrants to represent their respective country by wearing a traditional costume that represents the country. Being a South African, the Brits sisters were spoilt for choice as the country is teeming with cultural diversity.
“Alexia’s dress was inspired by the South African flag – we added some accessories such as beaded necklaces and earrings to add that South African flavour,” said Cindy.
Her little sister’s outfit was inspired by Zebra stripes and the designer added some red tulle to give more flare. The two girls were a sight as they strutted their stuff confidently on the runway.
They are reminded though that it is not just about dressing up and looking pretty – once the crown and sash have been handed over and the cheers have gone, the reigning title holders start with charity work.
“The great thing about this pageant is that a title holder has to work hard to maintain it. The girls and I will be visiting various charities and organisations such as Casa Caritas and children’s wards in hospital to do some work. I’m glad they will be working with me and learning about the importance of giving back,” she added.
Although still young, the two girls exude confidence and are willing to get dressed up again and show exactly how they bagged their titles.
“It was lovely when I won my crown. I was happy. I introduced myself to the judges and told them what my name was and that I liked playing netball, hockey and doing modelling. I also spoke about my country which I represented in my outfit,” she said eagerly as she showed off her dress.
The pageant bug seems to have bitten even the youngest sister in the Brits brood as two-year-old Taylin was recently crowned second princess in her first pageant which was won by her older sister, Carli.
The girls have qualified to enter the Little Miss World pageant next year which will take place in Turkey. Although it comes with a hefty R80 000 price tag for each girl, their mother hopes to make this a reality for the girls.
“Watching them win is the best thing ever. They’re so happy when they achieve something and as a parent, it’s such a wonderful thing to see. However, I’m glad that throughout the past year of them taking part in pageants they have learned the most important lesson of all – that you don’t always win and it’s better to expect less and give more,” she smiled.
