Vote for our own hip hop star
Jason Mangena has made it into the finals in the emcee category of the Sprite Uncontainable talent search
CROYDON resident and rapper, Jason Mangena, has made it to the final stage of the Sprite Uncontainable hip hop talent search competition.
He now needs Kempton’s votes to help him win the trip of a lifetime to New York in 2015.
The 25-year-old part time sound engineering student, songwriter and producer, is in the top 12 out of 2 500 hopefuls from around the country who auditioned for the competition in three categories, emcee, dance and graffiti.
“I am really excited to have made it this far, because not only will I get the opportunity to travel to New York City next year and meet some of my favourite rappers such as Talib Kweli, but it also gives me a huge career boost and will give me awesome experience too,” Mangena said.
Mangena, who started out as a dancer when he was 10 years old, has been writing music for about 10 years now.
“I released my first mixed tape, called Let Me Loose, back in December 2012, and I’m now working on my second one, which will hopefully be released early next year.
“I have also just finished shooting a music video for a track called Audio, a single from the first mix tape, which I plan on posting onto YouTube on August 2, the day of the Sprite Uncontainable competition finals.”
Mangena started rapping live in 2009 and has since performed in South Africa as well as Swaziland. Music is everything to this talented young man, who says music is what shaped him into the man he is today.
He counts international hip hop artists Jay Z, Lil Wayne and J Cole among his role models and locally he admires rappers Tumi from the band Tumi and The Volume, Da Les and Proverb “for pioneering hip hop in South Africa”.
The Sprite Uncontainable finals event will be held on August 2 in Diepkloof, Soweto.
People can vote for Mangena at www.spritehiphop.co.za until the closing date on August 2 at 8pm.
