It is believed the suspects were armed when they hijacked the truck driver.
According to the Tembisa SAPS spokesperson, Constable Tebogo Sesing, residents phoned the police after they managed to rescue the driver.
“The 32-year-old said he was delivering goods on Sunday evening when he noticed that the back door of the truck was open. He stopped the vehicle to close the door. To his surprise, he found three suspects inside the vehicle. They pointed a firearm at him and demanded the vehicle’s keys. The suspects also took money from the driver fled with the truck,” said Const Sesing.
The victim screamed for help and a large number of residents responded. They also managed to apprehend the three suspects.
“The police were called to the scene and the trio were arrested and detained at the Tembisa Police Station. One suspect was sent to hospital under police guard after was beaten by some angry residents,” he said.
The three suspects are expected to appear in the Tembisa Magistrate’s Court on charges of hijacking, possession of an unlicensed firearm and live ammunition.
“I am happy with the arrest, but we urge residents to not take the law into their own hands. Should residents apprehend someone committing a crime, they should immediately call the police. Let us work together in combating crime in Tembisa,” said Const Sesing.
