Taxi driver detained for rape

A 26-year-old male was arrested for allegedly raping a 38-year-old woman last Thursday.

According to the Tembisa SAPS spokesperson, Constable Tebogo Sesing, a 38-year-old woman was returning from Johannesburg to Winnie Mandela, Zone 10 in Tembisa, on Thursday evening.

“On arriving in Tembisa, the victim entered a taxi to travel to Winnie Mandela. She claimed to be alone in the taxi with only the driver. While travelling, the driver apparently offered to buy the victim food,” said Const Sesing.

The victim was surprised when the driver stopped next to an open veld. The suspect then allegedly raped the woman.

Const Sesing said the victim managed to get to a police station after the rape and reported the incident.

“Through intensive investigation and the assistance of the taxi association, the police managed to arrest a suspect. The suspect was detained at the Tembisa SAPS. We are happy with the arrest and are thankful for the co-operation of the association,” said Const Sesing.

The suspect is expected to appear in the Tembisa Magistrate’s Court on a charge of rape.
