VICTIMS of armed robbery, or any other form of crime, are urged to come forward and report the crimes at their local police stations.
This plea comes from Const Sharon Mahamba, Sebenza SAPS spokesman, after numerous people have been robbed at knife point in Edleen during the early hours of the morning while on their way to work.
Most of these victims are women.
“There are quite a number of these kinds of incidents but unfortunately they go unreported. Only one in four cases are reported. The only reason why I know of these cases, is because I live in the area, otherwise I wouldn’t have known anything at all,” Mahamba said.
“It doesn’t help if I know about these crimes and the victims do not report them. That is why I am pleading with the public to report these crimes, as well as any other suspicious criminal activity, so we can take action.”
According to Mahamba, the area where most of these crimes take place, is at a path on Colin Paul Street.
Mahamba would also like to warn pedestrians who use this path during the early hours of the morning to be extra vigilant.
“Make sure you ask someone to accompany you, especially when it is still dark. Also, it is always better to walk in groups as this lessens the chances of being attacked. People who travel alone are easier targets.”
In the robbery incidents that had been reported though, the description of the perpetrators is the same: three men armed with knives who attack between 4.30am and 5.30am. They are dark in complexion with short hair and wear dark clothes.
In the most recent incident that was reported, a woman was stabbed.
The men steal handbags and cell phones.
