Local star only female nominated in rap category

The talented all-round entertainer is the only female rapper nominated in the Best Hip Hop category in the Tembisa Community Awards

LOCAL up and coming singer and rapper, Mpumi Msomi, better known by her stage name Jessie JJ, has been nominated in the best rapper category for the 2014 Tembisa Community Awards.

What’s so special about this? She’s the only female artist nominated in the category.

“I feel so blessed an honoured to be the only woman nominated in this category, and even if I don’t win, the nomination shows me that my hard work is finally appreciated,” the 21-year-old said.

Msomi, who has been rapping and singing since 2009, has been nominated in three categories, including best hip hop artist, best dancing artist as well as best recording studio.

Living up to her former school’s name, Masiqhakaze Secondary, which means to blossom, this Birchleigh resident surely is flourishing into a force to be reckoned with in the entertainment industry.

“So far, I have recorded two songs, which are on YouTube. The first single is called Intombi YomZulu’ (which means a young Zulu girl). It is a house track produced by DJ Mavu, for which I did the vocals. The second one is called What Dreams Are Made Of by DJ Sean, featuring Mamelo Records Dancers, my back up dancers for performances and shows.”

Msomi, who is signed to Mamela Records, hasn’t chosen only one genre of music to create, and expresses herself through hip hop, RnB and deep house music. At the moment, she is doing vocals for a Soul Candi DJ.

An all-rounder, this talented young woman is also a dancer and actress and has been featured on popular TV soapies such as Rhythm City and Zabalaza, and is currently shooting for Isidingo.

To vote for Msomi, SMS Best Hip Hop Artist, or any of the other categories, to 076 236 2489.

The awards will be held at Rabasotho Hall in Sithama Section, Tembisa on November 1.
