The incident happened at around 11am on Sunday.
The two suspected robbers were badly beaten by the mob before the police arrived.
It is believed the duo attempted to rob a Pakistani tuck shop with a toy gun. An eyewitness, who asked to remain anonymous, said the criminals in the community are mostly taking advantage of the Somalian and Pakistani tuck shop owners.
“This is not the first or second robbery in the area. They get robbed every week,” she said.
She added that they heard the Pakistani tuck shop owner scream for help.
“We are tired of crime in our area. We intended to teach these criminals a lesson. We are happy the criminals could not run far from us,” she added.
The suspects were identified as hailing from Kaalfontein Extension.
The Tembisa SAPS spokesperson, Constable Tebogo Sesing who confirmed the incident, said the suspects were admitted to hospital for treatment under police guard.
“The suspects are 23 and 24 years old. A case of business robbery was opened. I am happy with the arrest but I urge the community to not take law into their own hands. Should they apprehend the suspects, residents should immediately phone the police. Let us work together in the fight against crime,” he said.
The two suspects are expected to appear in the Tembisa Magistrate’s Court.
