Teen third in boerewors comp

'I'm definitely entering again next year'

AN 18-year-old Kempton Park matric pupil came third at the 2014 Shoprite Checkers Championship Boerewors Competition’s provincial round for Gauteng in Boksburg on Saturday.

Kyle Biggin went up against some of the best boerewors makers in the country.

Top food experts from the South African Chefs Association (SACA) judged the provincial rounds.

This matric student from St Christopher’s Academy learned how to make wors from his dad, Stephen, who is regional manager of Shoprite in the Kempton Park area. He said the love for boerewors ran in his family.

“My dad has been in the industry for over 25 years.”

He said he decided to enter the competition on impulse and was happy to have made it this far. He believes what makes his boerewors different from others’ is a secret ingredient. Spices make a boerewors and if you use the correct spices, you can make perfect boerewors, he said.

Kyle loves super bikes and hot cars and often goes to the race track with his dad and his biker friends.

Kyle will not be going further in this year’s competition but said: “I’m definitely entering again next year.”
