Spurs go down 2-1

Highlands Park FC beat the vastly experienced Witbank Spurs 2-1 in an entertaining National First Division (NFD) game played at the Makhulong Stadium in Tembisa on Sunday this week.

Highlands Park FC, which was promoted to the first division this year, is using Makhulong Stadium as its home ground.

Spurs have been campaigning in the National First Division for more than a decade.

The team proved they were the more experienced side when they had their opponents playing with their banks against the wall in the opening 15 minutes, but failed to break the locals’ strong defence.

After realising their opponents were all over them, Highlands Park changed its tactics in the midfield and started playing fast-flowing football, sharing the ball with ease while distributing defence-splitting passes to their strikers.

They drew first blood when their left back, Khethukuthula Mbele, beat the ‘keeper with a volley from close range. It was 1-0 at the break.

Spurs came back spitting fire in the second half and started attacking their opponents from all angles.

But while trying to equalise, they left themselves open at the back.

Highlands Park equalised when one of their defenders cleared the ball from the back to their dribbling wizard Siphiwe Tshabalala, who dribbled past two defenders before beating the ‘keeper with a low shot.

Spurs pulled one back when Stopper Khoza headed in a good cross from the right flank.
