JMPD officer killed
Phiakga Moremi, an officer for the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD), was allegedly shot and killed in Ivory Park, Extension 2, on Wednesday last week.
It is believed the officer was shot in the head.
According to the spokesperson for the JMPD, Chief Superintendent Wayne Minaar, the 46-year-old Mr Phiakga Moremi was off duty when the incident happened.
“It is believed the victim was waiting for his vehicle’s tyre to be repaired at a tyre shop. He was still in uniform when he was approached by two armed men. The suspects shot him in the head and robbed him his service pistol,” he told Tembisan.
Chief Supt Minaar said the victim was a dedicated and passionate police officer at the JMPD.
The SAPS provincial spokesperson, Lieutenant Colonel Khensani Magoai, said a 32-year-old suspect was arrested, while the other suspect is still on the run.
“The suspect appeared in the Tembisa Magistrate’s Court on Monday. The case was reminded to September 29. He was remanded in custody. We are appealing to residents who may know, or have any information, about the other suspect to come forward and help the police,” she said.
A case of murder was opened at the Ivory Park SAPS.
The victim will be laid to rest at his home at Bochum, Limpopo, on Saturday, September 27.
