‘L drivers’ must also learn how to drive
Surely, driving lessons should be done privately, not using the vehicles which are supposed to be protecting us

On the way to taking my son to the doctor, I was passed by a police vehicle, driving rather erratically.
Once the vehicle had passed, I realised why. Two individuals in plain clothing, driving a police vehicle, with a big red “L” on the back.
Is this what our tax money is paying for? I believe the police must serve and protect but this is ridiculous.
Surely, driving lessons should be done privately, not using the vehicles which are supposed to be protecting us.
Capt Jethro Mtshali, Kempton Park SAPS spokesman, replies:
The police work 24 hours every day and their main function is to prevent, combat and investigate crime. They maintain public order, protect and secure the inhabitants of the republic and other property and uphold and enforce the law.
Apart from these functions, they train police officers to drive vehicles as it is required by the law that any person who drives a motor vehicle should undergo training and obtain a driver’s licence.
During training, drivers are taken to the street to be tested, however, it is normal that errors can be made during the process.
It is for that reason that experienced drivers should be alerted by putting an “L sign on the vehicle.
We, however, apologise if the “L sign” driver committed an error during that process.
Police officers are not exempted from paying tax as required by the law. This shows that police uphold the law.
