Mother arrested for killing baby
The Ivory Park police arrested a 23-year-old Zimbabwean woman for allegedly drowning her baby at Ebony Park on Friday last week.
According to the Ivory Park SAPS communications officer, Warrant Officer Neldah Sekgobela, the police found a foetus inside a river at Kaalfontein Extension, next to Ivory Park at around 11am.
“The police were informed by members of the community about the suspect who was heavily pregnant, and after realising that she was no longer pregnant and there was no sign of the baby.
“Police confronted the suspect who confessed that she gave birth to a healthy baby on Wednesday night. She said she drowned the baby inside a bucket,” said W/O Sekgobela.
W/O Sekgobela added that the suspect told the police that she threw the baby into the river at Umfuyaneni Section in Tembisa.
“She said she committed the crime as she could not afford to support the baby. According to her boyfriend, the suspect was nine months pregnant,” said W/O Sekgobela.
According to her boyfriend, the suspect did not inform him about the incident.
He added that he only noticed that the woman was no longer pregnant a day after she gave birth, and added that when he inquired, she did not respond. Police were called and she was arrested
W/O Sekgobela said the police are waiting for DNA tests that will be conducted soon.
She also said the suspect was detained at the Ivory Park police cells.
“A murder case was opened. The suspect is expected to appear in the Tembisa Magistrate’s Court soon,” she concluded.
