CAR theft in the Norkem Park SAPS precinct has escalated in September.
Most cases were reported in Van Riebeeck Park, Norkem Park, Birchleigh and Birch Acres.
According to Capt Lesibana Molokomme, spokesman for the police station, most of the cars are stolen at shopping centre parking lots during the day, while parents are attending school meetings in the evening and at weekend events,” Molokomme said.
Cars such as Toyotas and VW Polos were targeted the most by the thieves.
“We appeal to motorists to apply different mechanisms to prevent their cars from being stolen. Adding a gear lock or alarm system to your vehicle can make it more difficult for your car to be targeted.”
Schools can make arrangements well in time before an event or meeting with their Adopt a Cop police officials for their school.
Shopping centres can also beef up their security system by having their security company’s patrol cars become more visible at the malls, especially in these targeted areas.
